What's the widest patio door I can get without custom ordering?

Standard patio doors are typically available up to 12 feet wide (144 inches) without requiring custom manufacturing. Most manufacturers stock sliding patio doors in widths from 5 feet to 12 feet, with 8-foot and 10-foot being the most common sizes.

For sliding patio doors, you'll find readily available stock sizes including 60", 72", 96", 120", and 144" wide units. The 12-foot wide doors usually feature three panels - two stationary and one sliding panel. Beyond 12 feet, you're typically looking at custom orders which can add 6-12 weeks to delivery time and increase costs significantly.

French patio doors (hinged doors that swing open) are generally available up to 8 feet wide in standard configurations, though some manufacturers offer 10-foot units. These wider French doors often require structural considerations for the header span, especially in Ottawa's climate zone where snow loads are a factor.

In Ottawa's market, 10-foot sliding patio doors tend to offer the best balance of availability, cost, and performance. They're readily stocked by most suppliers and provide excellent views while maintaining structural integrity. The wider 12-foot units, while available, may require longer lead times and can be more challenging to install properly due to their weight and size.

For openings wider than 12 feet, consider folding or bi-fold patio door systems which can span much wider openings while maintaining reasonable panel sizes. These systems can extend to 16-20 feet wide using multiple panels.
