What window style works best for a stairwell?

Stairwell windows are one of the more interesting design challenges in a home — they need to provide light and visual appeal while being essentially impossible to reach for opening or cleaning.

Fixed (picture) windows are almost always the best choice for stairwells. Since stairwell windows are typically located at awkward heights and angles, operability is rarely practical or necessary, and a fixed window maximizes glass area and light transmission without the mechanical complexity of an operable sash.

Why fixed windows make sense here: Stairwells benefit enormously from natural light — a well-placed fixed window can illuminate an entire staircase from top to bottom. Because you won't be opening it for ventilation, you can prioritize glass area and frame style over function. Fixed windows also tend to be more airtight than operable windows, which matters in Ottawa's Climate Zone 6 winters where every air seal counts.

For shape and configuration, tall narrow windows (portrait orientation) follow the diagonal line of the staircase naturally and look intentional rather than awkward. A single tall fixed window, or a vertical stack of two fixed windows offset along the stair angle, are both popular approaches.
