What is a nail fin on an Ottawa window install?

A nail fin (also called a nailing flange) is a thin, flat extension that runs around the perimeter of a window frame, used to fasten the window directly to the wall's rough opening framing during new construction or full-frame replacement installations.

How it works in practice: The nail fin sticks out about 1–1.5 inches from the window frame and is nailed or screwed through the exterior sheathing into the structural framing (studs and header) around the rough opening.
