My window cranks are getting stiff - what lubricant should I use on them?

White lithium grease or 3-in-1 oil are your best options for stiff window cranks. These lubricants won't attract dirt and dust like some heavier oils, and they'll provide long-lasting smooth operation.

For casement and awning window cranks, start by cleaning out any built-up dirt or debris from the crank mechanism with a small brush or compressed air. Apply a small amount of white lithium grease to the gear teeth and pivot points - this is the preferred choice because it stays put and won't drip or run. If you don't have lithium grease on hand, a few drops of 3-in-1 household oil on the moving parts will work as a temporary solution.

Avoid using WD-40 or penetrating oils as a long-term solution, as these are designed to displace moisture rather than provide lasting lubrication. Also stay away from heavy greases or petroleum-based products that can gum up over time, especially in Ottawa's temperature swings from hot summers to cold winters.

While you're maintaining your windows, check the weatherstripping and ensure the window closes and locks properly. If the crank mechanism is severely worn, has stripped gears, or the window doesn't seal tightly when closed, it might be time to consider window replacement rather than ongoing repairs. Modern casement windows have much smoother operating mechanisms and better energy efficiency than older units.

Apply lubricant sparingly - a little goes a long way, and excess lubricant will just collect dirt. Plan to re-lubricate annually, ideally in the fall before winter when you'll be opening and closing windows less frequently.
